Under the 1905 Aliens Act, all migrants had to register as “Aliens”. Sick and disabled people and those with no funds or work were turned away, though there was an asylum exemption “to avoid prosecution or punishment on religious or political grounds” The act affected Jews who were escaping pogroms, poverty and discrimination in Eastern Europe between 1870 and 1914. Up to 150,000 jewish people arrived in Britain in this period.
